FFL transfers are how every handgun bought online legally reaches its owner. Every handgun sold by Ammunication Co ships to a federally licensed firearms (FFL) dealer. This page explains how an FFL transfer works when you buy a 2011 pistol online, what you need to provide at checkout, and what to expect when you pick up your firearm.
What Are FFL Transfers?
An FFL transfer is the legal process that moves a firearm from a seller to a buyer through a licensed dealer. Federal law requires handguns purchased from a dealer in another location to be shipped to an FFL holder, who then runs the background check and completes ATF Form 4473 with you. You can read the federal rules on the ATF firearms page.
Step-by-Step: Buying a 2011 Handgun Online
- Choose your pistol. Browse our 2011 pistol shop and add your firearm to the cart.
- Find a local FFL dealer. Most gun shops and many gunsmiths accept transfers. Call ahead and ask about their transfer fee.
- Enter the dealer at checkout. Our checkout has an FFL dealer section. Enter the dealer’s name, city and state, phone number and, if you have it, their FFL license number.
- We confirm and ship. We verify the dealer’s license before shipping your pistol directly to them.
- Pick up your firearm. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, complete Form 4473 and the background check, and take your new 2011 pistol home.
FFL Transfers: Tips for a Smooth Pickup
Most FFL transfers go smoothly when you plan ahead. Call your dealer before you order to confirm they accept transfers from online retailers, ask about their fee and find out when they receive shipments. Some dealers like you to email them your order confirmation so they know the firearm is coming.
When the pistol arrives, your dealer will contact you. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID that shows your current address. If your ID address is out of date, bring a supporting government document as allowed by federal rules. Inspect the firearm before you complete the paperwork, then fill out ATF Form 4473 honestly and completely while the dealer runs your background check.
Delayed or Denied Checks
Some background checks are delayed for additional review. Your dealer will explain the next steps. If a transfer cannot be completed, contact us and we will help arrange a return through the dealer.
What You Need
- You must be 21 or older to buy a handgun from a licensed dealer.
- A valid government-issued photo ID with your current address.
- Any permits or licenses your state or city requires for handgun purchases.
State and Local Restrictions
Some states and cities limit which handguns can be sold, or restrict magazine capacity. Many 2011 pistols ship with 17 to 20 round magazines. Before you order, check your state and local laws, and ask your FFL dealer if they can accept the model you want. If a firearm cannot legally be transferred to you, contact us before placing your order.
Transfer Fees
Your FFL dealer sets their own transfer fee, which you pay directly to them at pickup. Fees vary by shop, so call a few dealers in your area to compare.
FFL Dealers: Sending Us Your License
If you are an FFL dealer receiving a firearm for a customer, email a copy of your license to info@ammunitiondepot.co so we can keep it on file and speed up future shipments.
